The offspring grows - and with it the needs for the ideal children's mattress

Children grow fast - and not only from their clothes! As soon as they have become too big for the baby bed, a crib is needed that will serve as a cozy and cuddly sleeping place for the offspring for years to come. However, the purchase of a new bed is also coupled with the purchase of a suitable slatted frame and very important: the ideal children's mattress.
But which mattress is best suited for a growing child? After all, the little ones should have as comfortable a night's rest as possible in order to be properly rested during the day so that they can face the daily challenges. A proper children's mattress is a must in this regard, because only if the little ones also lie comfortably and healthily can they recover properly.
So what should you look for when choosing? Do you prefer a foam mattress, a pocket spring mattress or even a zone mattress? What is better for the child?
We at 123moebel.de are happy to help you find the perfect mattress for your offspring!

The ideal size so that the little ones can stretch out properly

Between three and five years, most children move from the baby bed (70x140cm) to the children's and youth bed, where 90x200cm is the most common size. By the way, the length of 200cm is also common for adult beds. Children should now have enough space to stretch out in their bed.
When buying a mattress for loft beds, please make sure that the mattress does not exceed a certain height: 14cm is usually the recommended maximum mattress height. This is the only way to ensure that the distance between the mattress and the upper edge of the fall protection remains large enough for your child to lie safely and for the fall protection to do its Job.

A firm mattress for children is good for the spine

Mattresses for children should have a certain amount of firmness so that your junior's muscles, spine, shoulders and back are optimally supported during sleep. Since the skeleton and muscles are still growing during childhood, this is very important to prevent poor posture or postural damage from developing. Your child should not sink in more than 3 to 4cm during sleep. The spine of children is initially quite straight during the growth phase and only forms the typical S-shape between the ages of 12 and 15.
The mattress for the children's bed should generally have stable and tread-proof edges. Because as soon as the tots jump around on it (which will be the case sooner or later), the edges prevent them from slipping into the gap between the mattress and the edge of the bed.

5- or 7-zone mattress only for teenagers over 150cm tall

During puberty, the body changes. In particular, the muscles now form more and more and the body of your offspring now becomes more similar to that of an adult - shoulders and hips, for example, become broader. For teenagers from a height of about 150cm and a weight from about 30kg, mattresses that are equipped with different zones are now suitable. But be careful: mattresses with different zones are NOT suitable for babies and toddlers!

Tips for the care of mattresses

  • When you unpack your new mattress at home, it may emit a certain odor. Don't worry: this isn't harmful and comes from the fact that mattresses are sealed in plastic film right after production. Just air out the new mattress for about 24 hours.
  • Generally: the mattress should be placed on an adjustable slatted frame - to ensure optimal air circulation under the mattress.
  • Turn and rotate your mattresses regularly: from the top to the bottom, from the foot to the head end. This will help prevent wear and tear.
  • Air out your mattress daily: remove the pillow and blanket from the mattress so that it can "breathe" (it is best to open a window for airing at the same time). This allows stored moisture to escape, which every person releases into the air in the room and into the mattress.
  • Make sure that the mattress has a removable, breathable and washable cover that can be washed regularly. Slipcovers made of cotton or even covers for allergy sufferers protect against dust, dirt and body exhalations.
  • Mattress pads with wetness protection provide additional protection in case of minor accidents.
